Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Gardens

A few weeks ago (ok, it was a few months ago) a friend of mine took me on my first trip to the Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Gardens – one of his favorite places to visit in Hong Kong.

After a fairly short MTR ride and less than five-minute walk, I could easily see what’s to love about this peaceful escape tucked between the sky rises of the Diamond Hill neighborhood. I’m not sure that there are many places like this in Hong Kong, actually. Situated on more than 8 acres of land, the Nan Lian Gardens are certainly something to see. Flowers, plants, rock structures, koi ponds and man-made waterfalls can all be discovered among the winding path that takes you through the gardens. Each flower, plant, etc. is placed with specific rules and methods according to the style of the Tang Dynasty.

In continuing this tranquil journey, you’ll find yourself at the Chi Lin Nunnery. Via Discover Hong Kong, the Chi Lin Nunnery was established in 1934 and renovated in Tang dynasty style (AD 618–907) in 1990. The Nunnery is a large temple complex of elegant wooden architecture, treasured Buddhist relics and soul-soothing lotus ponds. The complex also includes a series of temple halls, some of which contain gold, clay and wooden statues representing divinities such as the Sakyamuni Buddha and bodhisattvas.

Amid the ever-growing and expanding construction that is always popping up in Hong Kong, it’s so nice to have an escape such as this. If you’re like me, and enjoy reading the about history of Buddhism and relishing in the culture, then this is your place. But please keep in mind, like most temples in Hong Kong, this is an active worship site, so taking photos within the confines of the sanctuary are forbidden. Please don’t be the rude tourist who breaks this rule. Photos outside the sanctuary and within the gardens are fine.

There’s also a museum, vegetarian restaurant and a tea house on sight. You could easily spend a few hours here and then catch the MTR back home.

How to get there

Take the MTR to the Diamond Hill Station, Exit C2. Follow the signs and walk for around five minutes until you reach the entrance of the Nunnery.
