Hiking the Victoria Peak

Victoria Peak is arguably Hong Kong's most visited tourist location. In fact, roughly seven million people flock to the top every year to catch a photo of the infamous skyline. As a local, I’ve traversed the peak by tram, car, bus and a few different hike routes.

As there are several hiking paths that can get you to the top, I want to share how I got there from where I live on Bowen Road. Bowen Road is located in the Mid Levels area on the island, and is one of the more popular running and walking paths in Hong Kong. This is because Bowen Road is completely flat (rare for Hong Kong), easy to get to from Central and is a nice distance (about five miles) with zero traffic! You really can’t beat it.

While running along Bowen Road many out-of-towners often ask how to reach the Peak, and now, I'm happy to say that I can give them an answer.

Here are the check points to follow starting from Bowen Road:

  1. Start on Bowen Road, heading east
  2. Wan Chai Gap Road
  3. Dutch Path
  4. Central Green Trail (after about 1 mile, take Barker road toward the Peak)

It will feel a little silly as this route swings back around Bowen road before reaching the Central Green Trail, but I believe there’s no other direct way. However, if you’re reading this and know of a better way, please tell me! In total, this hike took me a little over two hours, with a few water stops in between. The paths mentioned above are covered with vegetation, so don’t forget bug repellent!

No matter where you’re coming from in Hong Kong, there are several ways to reach the Peak. Here’s a great resource to check out if you’re interested in the hike.

And last, but certainly not least, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone who has reached out to Dave and I since my last post. I cannot tell you the countless women (and men) who contacted us to share their personal stories of miscarriage. Your stories of strength and hope continue to bring us peace. Thank you all. You have no idea how much it means to us.
