Hiking the Dragon’s Back

Last week, I checked another hike off the Hong Kong to do list by tackling the Dragon’s Back. Unlike the Twins, this hike is much easier and doesn’t take quite as long but still lends itself to some outstanding views. At the top (about 285m high) you’ll see sights of the coastline and a couple offshore islands spotted in the distance. What’s also cool about this trek are the para-gliders launching themselves off the ridge.

While the hike is scenic, the main tip I have is that it’s more of an out and back hike, or up and down, rather. I learned this the hard way. When I first set out, I didn’t completely do my research and assumed that I could get from the top of Dragon’s Back all the way down to Shek O Village. The trick is that you can get there, but it requires you to partially come back down the mountain and take the path that loops around the west side, which eventually leads to Shek O Road. From there, you can either walk or take the number 9 bus. Unfortunately, by the time I reached Shek O Village, many of the restaurants were closed

Fun fact: many Hong Kong restaurants close around 2 p.m. and reopen around 6 p.m. so I hopped the bus again to Wan Chai for some post hike sustenance.

Interested in taking on the Dragon? Here’s how I got there.
