How to eat your way through Sai Ying Pun

I’ve been in Hong Kong for about three weeks now (how crazy is that?) which means I’ve had ample time to do a lot of eating throughout my neighborhood of Sai Ying Pun. Sai Ying Pun is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Hong Kong. Located in the Western District, Sai Ying Pun literally means “West Camp” and was one of the first areas settled by the British military. Today, the culinary scene truly is a melting pot of East meets West. In my research, I’m finding that many think Sai Ying Pun is the next “hot spot” neighborhood in Hong Kong.

Which leads me to believe we landed in a pretty great location to serve as our introduction to Hong Kong. That being said, we need to talk about the food here. Because I spend most of my days exploring alone, I get to be in charge of what’s on the menu.

Here’s my top list of all the great eateries in Sai Ying Pun. I haven’t had a chance to hit all of them yet (give me time), and there’s a few that I haven’t exactly loved, so here’s my list of spots you can’t go wrong with.

International cuisine

Locofama – International

If you’re looking for something healthy and natural this is your spot. Locofama focuses on all organic, paleo dishes sourced from local farmers. If you’re not in the mood for that, no worries, because there are some things you can order that aren’t paleo, like black truffle crab dip and prawn and basil pesto linguine. So good!

U-Hang – Korean

This is my favorite place in Sai Ying Pun. Here is where you will find awesomely-tasty Korean fried chicken, the best I’ve ever had, paired with their homemade sweet and spicy sauce. I also sampled the bulgogi beef tacos and dumplings. I could honestly eat here every day and not get sick of it.

Sai Ying Pun

La Rotisserie – French

Although a very small place (you might be better ordering take out here) the freshness of La Rotisserie is unmatched. If you’re looking for a heaping mound of fresh vegetables and a whole or half chicken, this is your go to. You can also get various chicken sandwiches and quiche.

G/F, 71 Third Street

Sai Ying Pun

Taco Chaca – Mexican

This place has the best enchilada I’ve ever eaten in my life. Their salsa is also homemade and the perfect amount of spice. Cali-Mex on High Street also has pretty decent Mexican, but it doesn’t quite compare to Taco Chaca (IMO).

Thai on High

If you’re looking for great Thai food at a reasonable price, this is your jam. The menu is very extensive and the portions are large. I ordered beef pad thai with an iced coffee and paid about $17 USD, that’s fairly cheap for food in Hong Kong.

Western-style meals

Craving some of the comforts of the States (burgers, wings, pizza, etc.)? Look no further than the below. I shamefully admit that my first few days alone in the area I frequented these spots. Alas, none of them disappointed, oh, and they’re ALL located on High Street making it very convenient.

  • High Street Grill
  • Granville Island
  • Flying Pig Bistro
  • Ollies
  • Jacks Pizzeria
  • Craft Brew & Co.

Where I want to go next

Fish School

Fish School is fairly new to Sai Ying Pun, opening just a year ago, the menu focuses on, well seafood. They buy the fish daily from fishermen-operated businesses to ensure the freshest, seasonal selection. They also work with local farmers to source fruits, herbs and vegetables.

Ping Pong Gintoneria

More of a nightlife spot, this place just seems really cool. From their website, “Ping Pong Gintoria is the hipspot for stylish sipsmiths and cocktail casualistas alike.” When walking along second street, you would probably miss this place if you weren’t paying attention. Hidden away, you’ll find a red door with the words “Ping Pong City” etched in Chinese. This is the spot.

Here’s what I know: This place used to be an old ping pong warehouse, housing tournaments and games (hence the name). The owners are from Spain and really love gin, you can find more than 100 different varieties to sample.

What are some of your favorite spots to eat and drink in Sai Ying Pun? I’d love to try them all!
